Below is a story about Mary, who is struggling with depression.

Mary is a married, working mother of three children. Mary is sad because her parents have never given her the attention, acceptance, or validation she has always craved. Mary often cries alone after talking with her parents because she still feels disrespected and misunderstood. Due to years of conflict with her parents, Mary found herself losing interest in pleasurable activities and gained considerable weight when she began using food for comfort.

At work Mary has difficulty thinking, concentrating and making decisionswhich caused a warning from her boss. At home, Mary is either restless or tiredand not able to spend enough time with her husband or children. That has caused marital problems and conflict with her children. Mary now feels worthless and guilty. Mary does not believe she would kill herself, but has suicidal thoughts and is preoccupied with dying when she is overwhelmed.

As you may have guessed, the emboldened words are symptoms of depression. Depression can range from mild to moderate to severe feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.

John is single male, in his early 30s who was raised in a family that enforced stringent rules. Johns father was an engineer and a perfectionist. His mother was very critical in nature. That caused John to be constantly nervous and he would procrastinate because he feared making mistakes and failing his parents. Currently, John has felt keyed up and on edge about his job performance. John feels he worries so much about failing that is drains him of his energy, causing him to become easily fatigued. John also has difficulty concentrating on his work and gets so nervous that his mind goes blank. This has caused John to become irritable with his co-workers and girlfriend. John tries to cope with his stress by working out at the gym to alleviate his muscle tension. John also finds it difficult to fall and stay asleep because he is preoccupied with fears of his boss disapproval.
